We spend a staggering £670 billion pounds a year on hotel holidays. With over 700,000 hotels and resorts around the world to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re after swanky 5 star opulence or a homely B&B, when these hotel holidays go right, they’re perfect paradises and much needed R&R. But when they go horribly wrong, they can be cataclysmic. Glynis Barber narrates this 90-minute special that features first-hand interviews with people whose hotel holidays ended in disaster.
Highlights include a newlywed couple’s horror when their honeymoon hotel turns out to be a half-built Mexican building site. A Tenerife holiday is ruined by ear-shattering drilling, and a young mother faces the prospect of paralysis after a tragic hotel waterslide accident.
Other stories include a staycationer who is horrified to find soiled bedding and muck everywhere at a resort she dubs Britain’s filthiest. A trip to Zante takes a surreal turn when one guest finds herself the only person staying in the hotel. And there’s ‘no room at the inn’ when a young dance troupe travel to New York to perform a show, only to find their accommodation has been double-booked. So, the girls, some of whom are as young as 13, have no option but to spend the night sleeping on the floor, in the corridor of their hotel.
Mother nature shows her wicked side when a hotel in Taiwan is rocked by an earthquake, leaving its residents fleeing for their lives and the building looking more like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. A high-end break to Cuba hits the skids when Hurricane Irma strikes, and there’s an explosion in Cyprus which leaves holidaymakers fearing for their lives.
Expert interviews include travel presenters Leah Charles-King and Lee Juggurnauth and journalist and broadcaster Simon Calder.
